Benefits of Gayatri Mantra

Oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ
tát savitúr váreṇ(i)yaṃ
bhárgo devásya dhīmahi
dhíyo yó naḥ pracodáyāt

A general translation of the Gayatri Mantra can be given as:

"We meditate upon the spiritual effulgence of that adorable supreme divine reality
Who is the source of the physical, the astral and the heavenly spheres of existence.
May that supreme divine being enlighten our intellect, so that we may realise the supreme truth."

Syllable Translation

Om: Brahma, the creator of the universe
Bhur: Embodiment of vital breath
Bhuvah: Destroyer of miseries and symbol of bliss
Svaha: All pervading, blissful God
Tat: That (Supreme being)
Savitur: Effulgent, radiant
Varenyam: Supreme, excellent
Bhargo: Destroyer of sins
Devasya: Bestower of divine power
Dhimahi: To adopt, to acquire
Dhiyo: Intellect
Yo: Who
Nah: Our
Prachodayat: Inspires to righteousness
